Mollet Country House and Farm

Both sides of the roof show beautiful, old, well-kept, traditional clay tiles. From the porch you can appreciate the stunning views to the Cardo range of mountains and count the holes in the stone walls on the other side of the river bank only a stone’s throw away.

The house itself is surrounded by peach and apricot orchards, lovingly cared for all year round so as to reap their juicy rewards in the harvesting month of May. Mingo is a farmer, passionate about the land to which he has dedicated all of his life, like his parents and grandparents before him.

He has also dedicated much time into improving the rustic building, making it cosy and comfortable for friends and family to enjoy.

On the other hand, the garden has changed a lot since the construction of the Eix of the Ebre that is situated nearby. Before the 1990s, Mollet was a very remote, isolated place, only reachable by boat from Benifallet about 3km upstream.

During this time, Mingo’s father and his neighbours accessed the farm by tractor, a slow uncomfortable journey especially for those occasional passengers who had to ride on a box on the back of the tractor.

For many years both sides of the river were adorned with the lush evergreen groves of mandarins and oranges. All of the locals remember the splendour of that time when farmers were reasonably prosperous. However, the land is not only subject to the cycle of the seasons and of course, changes in demand have also affected the crops and so the varieties have been adapted to suit the ever changing consumer wishes.

In fact, in the 1950s the whole area of Mollet, previously owned by one person, was sold in parcels of which Mingo’s grandparents bought one. The area, previously only being home to carob trees, was cleared and the more profitable pears and peaches were planted.

The original building was just a stone barn in which to sleep. This made the long trip from the village with the slow plodding of the mule and cart bearable during the hottest hours of the day.

Mollet country house has grown over the years to accommodate Mingo and Maria Jose’s family. It is a beautiful cosy place that could tell us many stories. A story still in the making, a story which can include you
